Announcing the 2010 Scholarship Winner!

Emily Barnett is a graduating senior at Gahanna Lincoln High School. While in high school, Emily participated in everything from sports to academic clubs. She played three years of volleyball, lettering in the third while also playing one year of girl's golf. In addition, Emily participated in three years of Model United Nations and this past year was a member of her school's National Honor Society chapter.

One of Emily’s favorite courses was Newspaper. On Newspaper she served for two years doing everything from reporting and managing ad sales to editing the opinions section.

Once at IU Emily plans to major in Marketing, which is a field she truly realized her interest for after this past year in her school's marketing program, DECA. Emily had quite a few achievements as a part of the class, but most notably was her yearlong research project on a new school structure (Clark Hall) being implemented at Gahanna Lincoln High School. The project consisted of 30 pages of research, findings, and recommendations for the school board and when Emily presented this project at a state-level competition, it placed first. She then went on to make the top 16 finalists at Nationals with this project.

The Chapter would also like to thank all alumni who made donations to make this scholarship possible.

Huge crowd attends 2010 Indiana Day!

On Thursday, February 4, 2010, our Chapter held our annual celebration of Indiana Day in conjunction with a game watch for the IU men’s basketball game versus Purdue.

We had one of the largest crowds of alumni attend this event, including two past Presidents who served in the 1980s. It was great to hear about our Chapter from years past.

Many IU items were raffled off and we also collected donations for Laps for Love, a fundraiser that benefits children with cancer and Children’s Hospital.

We want to thank all the alumni who attended and helped make this event such a great success!

2009 Children’s Hospital toy drive a success!

On Saturday, December 12, 2009, our Chapter met for our annual holiday party. Each alumni that attended this event brought one or more items for donation to Children’s Hospital. Thanks to great participation by our alumni, we met our goal of donating 100 items to Children’s Hospital this year!

We want to thank all the alumni who attended this event because, without you, our donation would not have been possible!

Two Events in Honor of Second Annual IU Cares Month

IUAA Chapters across the United States will participate in community service projects and activities during April in celebration of the second annual IU Cares Month. This year, the IUAA Columbus Chapter held not one, but two events to make more of an impact in our local community.

The first event, a blood drive, was held the week of April 5th. We have held blood drives in the past and have always had a great response from our alumni.

The second event was held on Saturday, April 25th. This was a new event for our Chapter. We asked for local alumni to volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore located in Westerville, Ohio. The feedback from the alumni who volunteered was overwhelmingly positive and we plan to continue offering this volunteer opportunity periodically throughout the coming years.

The Chapter would like to thank all alumni who participated in these events. Without our alumni, we would not have had such successful events!

Look for us on Facebook!

While you’re searching for your seventh grade science partner or your old Cub Scout leader, check out the IU Alumni Association of Columbus in Facebook too!

Every year your officers of the IUAA of Columbus try new events and ideas to keep our local alumni involved and interested in our activities. With Facebook fast becoming a premier networking site, we thought we’d better get our own page to help you connect with your Hoosier friends. We invite you to join our site at www.facebook.com and search for the group name “IU Alumni Chapter Columbus, OH.”

Please note that it is not necessary to join our Facebook page to be active in our Chapter. We developed our own Web site several years ago, and we will continue to keep it up-to-date. That address is www.iuacco.org. We will also send e-mail and mail announcements.

We are also always interested in feedback from our alumni. If you have any suggestions or comments, you can e-mail any of the officers at www.iuacco.org. Just click on the “Officers” link to contact us.
